European Championships 2019. My third Euros in the Open and for the first time in the second (A) group. This would make the battle for the squat and deadlift medals easier.

I did not manage my weight well enough so I had to do the biggest watercut ever. Started from mid 87s only four days out. Extreme delay during travel made the watercut more challenging.
With a combination of gut content manipulation, fasting, spitting and a watercut I made weight.

Unfortunately I had had minor injuries for some time in the hip, knee and scapula. Still I felt pretty strong and I was confident that small PRs were definitely possible.

↑ Because 250 went up so easily decided to increase weight a little. Sank this one and got three whites.

↑ Just coming out of the hole I felt a pop in my left knee area. I knew I tore some muscle...

At first I thought it was a quad muscle or adductor but it's probably the sartorius.
I was mentally devastated. Even though this tear hurt a lot less than last time (hamstring/glute 8 years ago) I knew a PR total was probably not happening anymore.

↑ After a pep talk from the coaches I was determined to not give up this time. Biggest grind of the whole tournament.

Arch was submaximal. I can think of two reasons: (1) light cramping in the lower back muscles maybe due to the cut and (2) less leg drive due to injury.

↑ Really close to locking it but I just could not fully extend my legs and push my hips through.

Noticed I could push less hard with the legs during warmups already. Honestly quite surprised to get 312.5 so far up considering the situation.

Result 5/9 712.5kg 725.12 IPF points.

8th (of 20) -83kg.

I try very hard to be positive about this. A few things I can name are:

- I have the biggest conventional deadlift of the European 83s.
- This was my best placing at Euros yet.
- Squat and deadlift medals are not far away.
- Popping the sartorius could have led to the discovery of which hip muscle has bugged me for months now.
- No more excuses to NOT rest and heal up.
